Village of L'Île-Bouchard
This charming little village located in Indre-et-Loire, about 50 kilometres from Tours, was named in the second half of the 9th century by the lord who founded it. Its unusual character still attracts visitors today: its two suburbs (connected by a bridge) are separated by the Vienne River, which surrounds an island in its centre. On the cultural side, as you stroll around, you will see the Church of St Gilles, an impressive monument built in the 11th century using the symbolic stone of Touraine: tuffeau. The Priory of St Leonard still has visible ruins. Built in 1067, the remains of this majestic building now reveal the land registry dating from 1832. Thanks to 100 years of conservation efforts, you can still admire this listed historical monument. In summer, take a dip in the Vienne river. The supervised swimming area is located below the campsite (direct access).
Town of Chinon
An unmissable destination in the Loire Valley, this historic town, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, overlooks the Vienne River between Tours and Saumur (16 km from the campsite). A former medieval city, it is still possible to visit its fortress, which houses the castle. Guided tours by Histopad (360° 3D view) offer a fun way to discover the history of Chinon and visualise the buildings and life from the 12th to the 15th century, as well as the old town, whose half-timbered houses add to the charm of this ancient village. Among these old buildings, you will pass the Maison Rouge, one of the oldest in the town, the Palais du Bailliage and the Hôtel des États Généraux, which houses the Musée du Vieux Chinon (Le Carroi), illustrating the history of the town. As you wander through the narrow streets, stop at one of the many restaurants and sample the local cuisine (Chinon wine, Poires Tapées, asparagus from the Richelieu region, etc.). Allow a whole day for your visit.
The village and vineyards of Panzoult
It would be a shame to pass through Touraine without sampling its wines! Renowned for its wines and famous grape varieties, stop off at one of the many nearby wine cellars offering tours and tastings. Be sure to visit the small village of Panzoult (adjacent to Ile-Bouchard), otherwise known for its Chinon appellation wines in particular. For an original discovery outing, head to the Cave de la Sibylle, where 14 independent producers have come together to promote the richness and flavours of this terroir. Sales and tastings are available on site, for a moment to share.
Canoe/kayak trips
Set sail on the waters of the Vienne and enjoy a relaxing moment with family or friends. Routes for all levels are available from Chinon (from 6 to 45 kilometres). You can also mix things up and combine canoeing with cycling for an even more active outing! Guided tours are available for groups.
A stopover in the Saumur region...
As you continue your journey towards Anjou, you will inevitably pass through the town of Saumur (47 km away), famous for its equestrian prowess and impressive Renaissance castle. Its historic and picturesque town centre invites you to take your time and discover its unique architectural and cultural heritage. On the way to Saumur, stop off at the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, at the confluence of the Vienne and Loire rivers. It is the largest monastic site in Europe, a legacy of the medieval period, covering nearly 13 hectares.
